Song 1: “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” by Hillsong United

This song looks at faith, trust, and surrender in the face of uncertainty. The words reflect a journey of stepping into the unknown, relying on God’s strength when one feels vulnerable or overwhelmed.

Many of us experience being overwhelmed. I know I have. I was overwhelmed when I began my journey to lose 145+ pounds. I did it with God’s guidance and support and music is one support He provides.

It is important to trust in God’s presence and guidance, even when circumstances are difficult, and I would say especially when circumstances are difficult.

Often when we start something new, such as weight loss or improving health, we have fear and this song can encourage us to embrace our fears and take bold steps forward, knowing that we are supported by God.

Song 2: “I Will Rise” by Chris Tomlin

“I Will Rise” provides hope, resurrection, and the promise of eternal life. During sorrow and loss, these words show a deep faith in God’s power and bring comfort and renewal.

I needed this song during the time that my mother passed. My loss was almost unbearable. I could not understand how the world could keep spinning and people could continue to go on with their lives. I needed the reassurance of God’s power to bring comfort and renewal.

I love the tone of music, but my focus is on the lyrics. I listen for rhythm, but stay for the words.

The message in this song emphasizes resilience and transformation. It focuses on God’s love and grace during difficult times.

Song 3: “Fear Is a Liar” by Zach Williams

We all listen to inner fear which tells us lies. Yes, fear lies. Sometimes it seems easier to listen than to fight.

I avoided the solution for my weight loss journey for a long time due to fear, but finally listened to God over fear and heard the truth.

This song addresses overcoming fear and the lies it can tell us. It explores how fear leads us to doubt ourselves and our worth.

The message in the song is one of empowerment through faith, telling us that by trusting in God, we can break free from the grip of fear.

Breaking free from fear can lead you to the success and purpose God has for you.

It led me to lose 145 pounds; to stop having high blood pressure; to no longer be prediabetic; and to be able to function with my God given body.

We all experience challenges.

You may be trying to lose weight, trying to gain health, trying to manage finances, and any other of life’s challenges.

The lyrics show how our struggles and hardships can ultimately lead to personal growth and strength.

Mandisa, who sings this version of the song, shares her journey of overcoming difficulties, highlighting that through faith and perseverance, one can come out stronger than before.

This is what I wanted to hear; that it is possible to overcome. It is possible to be strong.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Song 6: “The Battle Belongs to the Lord” by Phil Wickham

I find success when I surrender all to God.

Yes, we need to make choices and participate in the plans God has for us, but the battle belongs to God.

We need to rely on God, not just when we are doing well, but in times of struggles and conflicts.

This song takes a firm stance on surrendering to God when we face challenges. God is where we will find comfort and strength.

God will show us how and lead us to overcome our obstacles.

The ultimate victory will come through God.

Song 7: “Chain Breaker” by Zach Williams

I have written about challenges in my weight, with my loss, and with needing to gain health. All of these challenges had me locked in chains.

My loss of my mother had me spiritually and emotionally bound and at 349 pounds I was physically bound.

I needed spiritual, emotional, and physical freedom.

This song uplifts the truth of Jesus breaking chains of addiction, pain, and any struggle that holds us back.

It enables us to feel hope and freedom, reassuring us that no matter what we are facing—whether it’s emotional, spiritual, or physical—there is a way out through faith in Christ.

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”

Galatians 5:1

Song 8: “What a Beautiful Name” by Hillsong Worship

So many times the way I made it through hardship and challenges was to praise God.

It is impossible to be downtrodden when praising our Lord.

“What a Beautiful Name” is a great way to worship Jesus and revere His name.

“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; We are His people, the sheep of His pasture.  Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name. For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations.”

Psalm 100

Song 9: “Overcomer” by Mandisa

Faith is our way out. Temptations and challenges will come at us, but with God all things are possible.

As you listen to this song, feel the strength that empowers and shows triumph over adversity. Let the song build you up as you focus on God and overcoming through faith.

Sometimes what we need is to just know that we are not alone. We are never alone.

Listening to this song will impart to you God’s companionship, support and presence.

The words provide comfort and let you know that you are never alone because God is always there to provide love and guidance.

“God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.”

Psalm 46:5

Song 11: “He Will Hold Me Fast” by Abundant Life Worship

Another great song to show us that trusting in God and faith will reveal God’s unwavering support.

There is definitely a pattern in these songs. We can learn from this pattern.

Trust God.

Have Faith.

God is always with us providing support and guidance.

Song 12: “You Are My Strength” by Hillsong

We just discussed the pattern. Why trust and have faith?

God is your strength.

As we trust God and have faith, God’s power and presence becomes the source of our strength in times of weakness and struggle.

This song serves as an uplifting reminder that we can lean on God as our foundation and strength, which brings us hope and resilience.

Song 14: “God Will Make a Way” by Don Moen

I could never have achieved a weight loss of 145 pounds, improved my health and extinguished my pain without God’s guidance and hope.

This song speaks to faith, hope and God’s guidance. That no matter how dire our circumstances seem, God has the power to create a path forward.

God will make a way.

Song 15: “Blessings” by Laura Story

We have discussed hardships, losses, and challenges. No matter what you are experiencing right now, God has a way out for you.

This song will help you see God’s blessings, even during the circumstances.

Sometimes we move through struggles to move closer to God and to rely on Him even deeper.

God blesses us every day, even in the midst of what seems impossible.

It is so difficult to accept blessings while in the middle of life’s challenges, but this song helps to show us that this in fact is true.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

James 1: 17

How to Use Music for Overcoming Challenges

Music has never been my first strategy, but when I do use music to overcome challenges I see great results.

Start and end your day by listening to Christian music during your routines. Whether you’re getting ready, having breakfast, taking a bath, or commuting.

I tend to listen during my commute and pray and worship before I start my work day.

Listen to Christian music to help with meditation or prayer. The music can enhance your focus and help you to connect with God and reflect on His word.

I often listen during times of stress and signing along helps to calm the waters.

I include Christian songs into family time, when possible. My husband is not a lover of Christian music, but will listen for a short time.

I love incorporating Christian music into my movement routine.

It helps me focus on God and exercise as a way to honor Him with the body He gave me. This way I am not always thinking about when this exercise will end, but I am focusing on Him.

Listening at work is tricky.

My job is at a public facility where I am not allowed to play Christian music, but I have headphones and when appropriate, especially at lunch, I listen to my music.

I praise and worship to music while folding laundry and cleaning the house.

Many times when we need to use music to overcome we are not in the mindset to take our time and look through various song selections. Create a playlist ahead of time.

You can create playlists based on many different choices.

1. Theme-Based Playlists: Design playlists around specific themes that align with your needs. For example, you could create playlists for “Hope and Healing,” “Strength and Courage,” or “Peace and Comfort.” Tailor the song selection to fit with these themes.

2. Daily Encouragement: Develop a playlist for daily motivation and encouragement. Include a mix of songs with affirming messages that remind you of God’s promises and encourage resilience.

3. Scripture-Inspired: Create a playlist based on songs that are inspired by or directly reference Bible verses.

4. Artist Focus: Build playlists featuring songs from specific artists known for their encouraging music or artists that you simply enjoy. I love 4Him and have a playlist with all their songs.

5. Situational Playlists: Create playlists for different situations where you might need encouragement. For instance, a playlist for “Stressful Workdays,” “Times of Doubt,” or “Moments of Grief” can provide targeted support when needed.

6. Praise and Worship: Assemble a playlist of praise and worship songs that focus on glorifying God and expressing gratitude. You can do two different sets of playlists, one that is lively and you can dance and praise and one that is soft and quiet that you can play in the background as you pray and meditate.

7. Workouts: Using songs in your workouts SoVery Blessed Christian Exercise Music Playlist. This strategy will help you continue working out while focusing on God and not the workout.
